The technology behind domain names is rather simple: A domain name is designed or purchased to best reflect the business being completed on the website. That being said, there are a few ways to ensure customers can find your domain, such as using dot com first and other extensions as back up, using your business name as the domain and purchasing misspelled domain names.
Use Dot Com
The first way to make sure your customers can find you is to use dot com first and foremost in your domain name. Dot com is still the most widely used extension, so it should be your first domain. Once you are established as a dot com, however, it is also important to buy other extensions, like dot biz and dot org. Buying as many of the possible duplicate extensions will minimize the possibility of being forced to buy the extension later at a high price, due to misrepresentation by another company or misdirected customers.
Use Your Business Name
The next tip in choosing a domain name is to use your name if you are a sole proprietorship, like BobJones.com, or using your company name, such as JonesDesign.com. This will make it easier for customers to find you; if the customer caught your name but couldn’t remember your website address, the customer could much more easily find the company at BobJones.com than something that is obscure.
Purchase Misspelled Domain Names
If your company name or your name are easy to misspell, purchase all of the possible misspellings to help direct traffic to you. For example, if your name were Kris Jones, you may wish to purchase both KrisJones.com and ChrisJones.com. Also, purchase both the correct spelling and incorrect spelling in each extension.
As you set up your domain names, it is important to use dot com, to use your business name and to purchase misspellings. Ensuring your customer can find you is the best way to increase business.
